A young queen loves getting things from all her seven countries. But the one thing she has never had is a melidrop, a legendary fruit said to be the tastiest thing in the seven countries. But the fruit rots a day after it is picked, so getting it across the ocean is a bit problematic. Also impossible. However, the queen is told of an adventurer named Bartlett, the only one who could do it, if it was at all possible. Bartlett and his friend Jacques le Grand set off to find a way to bring a melidrop back to the queen. While in the country where the melidrops grow, Bartlett discovers that one melidrop farmer sprays his melidrops with ice-cold water to keep them fresh. This gives Bartlett an idea. He hires a sea captain to find and tow an iceberg. They find one and drill a hole into it for the melidrop. On the way back across the ocean, the iceberg melts a good deal faster than expected. They make it back just in time as the last of the iceberg melts and deliver the melidrop to the queen.
In this book, the queen learn a hard lesson in patience and contentment. She grows from a rather selfish person, to a wiser one. The story is very entertaining, and very character building. Also, it is a great read-aloud for all ages!
