Synopsis

In the Land Between the Mountains, the Minnipin people thrive and flourish. They have their traditions and ways and everybody does what they should. Well, exept for four someones. Walter the Earl, Gummy, Curley Green and Muggles all ignore tradition. They live alone instead of raising a family, they wear outlandish colors instead of the proper brown and green. They compose poems, hunt for treasure and paint pictures instead of working. When Walter the Earl finds boxes of swords and armor, their strange ways get them exiled from the village, along with grumpy Mingy (The money-keeper) and they must make their way in the mountains.

But suddenly, everything gets ten times worse.

The ancient enemies of the Minnipins, the Mushrooms, have returned. And now, the outcasts must somehow save their persecutors from certain doom. Mingy is captured while spying, and Walter the Earl goes to rouse the village. He convinces the men to take up the armor and swords and march to the mountains. Meanwhile, Muggles and Curley fight for Gummy’s life, which is endangered by the poison from a Mushroom spear. The army eventually defeats the Mushrooms, and the Five Heroes are welcomed back to the village.

Review

One of the best books I have read. The author has woven a tale that is both hilarious and thought-provoking. One of the things that sticks out is how the Outcasts do not hesitate to try and save the people who put them out of house and home. Entertaining, and character building.
