Grace Johnson is a sixteen-year old living during the Civil War. She and her mother and sister are Christians, but her father is not. She is seeing the preachers son, David Carver, and her father is not encouraging. They meet a family called the Millers, and Mr. Miller, a strong nonbeliever begins to influence her father. The Carvers barn is mysteriously burned and they move to live with Mrs. Carvers parents. Grace is hearbroken, and cannot wait for the day of their return.
While the Carvers are away, Grace’s sister Rebekah contracts scarlet fever and dies. Mr. Johnson takes it very hard and Grace wishes more than ever that he had the peace that comes with being a child of God.
Three years pass and the Carvers return. Mr. Carver is still preaching against slavery, and Mr. Miller convinces Mr. Johnson and a few others to kill Mr. Carver. Grace discovers their plan and races to the Carvers. She convinces her father to not kill him, and all the other men, excepting Mr. Miller, agree. Her father comes to Christ and confesses to having burned the Carvers barn. He is forgiven. He gives his consent to David for him to marry Grace, and they have a double wedding with a friend of hers.
Very good, encouraging book. It makes you really consider how you treat others.
